Manually Selecting a Core Size in PI Expert

By default, PI Expert selects the smallest practical core size when optimizing a design. This may result in the selection of a core that is not supported by the Rapid Transformer Sampling Service. Use the Manual Start Point feature of PI Expert as described below to correct this.

Step 1 – Select Manual Start Point Option

From the Active Design menu, select Optimization Start Point, as shown below:

Next, select Manual Start Point and Click OK

Manual Start Point is now enabled for this design.

Step 2 – Select desired transformer core size

Open the transformer selection form by clicking on the transformer in the block diagram or by clicking the transformer icon from the toolbar.

A target icon to the left of the core type indicates the transformer selected automatically during optimization.

To select, simply click on the name of the desired transformer and click OK.

In this example the EI22 has been selected.

Step 3 – Optimize design

To optimize the design using the newly selected core size click the Optimize icon (target image) from the toolbar or select Active Design -> Start Optimization

The optimization process will start with the selected core.  If the selected core is too small then it will automatically keep trying progressively larger cores until the design passes.

Step 4 – Review Design and Save

If the manually selected core was too small then PI Expert may have changed the core size.  In this case go back to Step 2 and select a larger core size (supported by the RTSS).

When Design Passed is displayed, you may save the design.
