Step 1 – Complete the Design Using PI Expert or PI Xls
PI Expert and PI Xls are part of the PI Expert Suite from Power Integrations. Download your free copy of this software today! .
During the creation process, you'll be required to:
- Select a core and bobbin that is supported by at least one of the
RTSS vendors listed on the Component
Suppliers pages.
- In PI Xls the core selection is usually manual.
- In PI Expert the Autodesign feature may select a core that is not available in the RTSS. See the video tutorial title, "Designing with a Fixed PI Device and/or a Fixed Transformer Core."
- Check to ensure that the completed design is error-free, then save
and close the design:
- For PI Expert "Design Passed" should be displayed
- For PI Xls there should be no warnings or errors in the Info column. The screen shots below highlight what to look for:

Step 2 – Modify Design (optional)
You can make any modifications that are required. (For example, you can change the pin assignment, specify the exact number of bobbin pins, or adding shield windings for reduced EMI.) Be sure that none of your modifications have caused any design warnings or errors.
For tips on how to make these changes, see the PI Expert Suite help system. Note that, for most designs, the default calculations will be appropriate.
Save your design. The design file generated from both PI Expert and PI Xls includes all the necessary transformer design information. You may now send this file to Power Integrations!
